Great Harbour Cay
Shark Creek
January 19th, 2021
Shark Creek cuts across the mangrove swamp that makes up much of southern Great Harbour Cay. We entered at the shallow SouthWest entrance, dragging our outboard's skeg through the sandy approach. We worked slowly through the canopied mangrove swamp, pushing our way through with oars where there was too little water or too little width to maneuver by engine. At its Eastern exit, the channel broadens into a sandy estuary, nursery to scores of turtles. Forget about the tortoise and the hair. We couldn't chase down these shy and fast critters.
Why Shark Creek? Yes, we saw two juvenile lemon sharks at the entrance. Mangroves are amazing. Holding the land in place at water's edge. A nursery for untold numbers of juvenile swimmy things. A haven for birds.
Shark Creek can only be traversed about one hour before and after high tide. Watch the tide. Take water. Not a fun place to be stuck in low water.
